Corporate Nigeria (CN) talks to
Mr. Michael Druce
Managing Director
DHL Express Nigeria
Excellence Simply Delivered
CN: Mr Druce, DHL has been operating in Nigeria since 1979. Please describe the history of DHL’s operations in the country.
Mr Michael Druce: DHL in Nigeria had very humble beginnings opening up at the home of the late Otunba Raheem Ade-Komalafe in 1978 before moving to a small office the following year. Within 12 months DHL had opened its second office in Warri in response to the needs of the Oil & Gas Industry. DHL was an Express Industry pioneer in Nigeria opening a data processing centre when we moved to our current Head Office location in Isolo. Courier scanners were introduced in 1987 speeding up the availability of delivery information to the DHL Network and our customers around the world.
In 1996, DHL was awarded the Roy Synergy Award for Best Courier Company operating in Nigeria. The same year we received the ISO 9002 Certification from SGS Yarsley (UK), as well as from the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, demonstrating our commitment to quality assurance. In 2002, we launched the first DHL network flights, connecting Europe with West Africa, and today we operate a B767 daily between Leipzig our European Hub, and Lagos. In 2009 DHL opened its 2500sqm Airside/Landside Gateway facility, which is fully Customs Bonded allowing transfer of material direct from our flights to our facility for onward delivery to our customers. In 2010 DHL launched its Cold Chain Logistics solutions supporting the Life Sciences and Pharmaceutical Industries with end to end cold chain delivery.
DHL is recognized annually as one of the top 40 most recognized brands in Nigeria.
